Sri Devi Mageandran
Devi is a fully registered Speech Therapist under the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) and a member of Speech and Language Therapists in Singapore (SALTS). She graduated from La Trobe University, Australia in 2008 with a Bachelors in Speech Pathology (First-class Honours).
Devi previously worked at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) for 10 years. She assessed and managed feeding and swallowing disorders in babies and children with prematurity, genetic syndromes, cardiac and neurological conditions and fussy eating. As a senior speech therapist, she worked closely with doctors and other professionals in multi-disciplinary teams to provide holistic care for children with complex medical needs, such as tracheostomy, tube feeding and ventilator.
In 2012, Devi was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Fellowship by Singhealth to observe best practices in reputable hospitals in United States of America, such as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Children’s Wisconsin – Milwaukee Hospital. Devi was invited to give talks to professionals, parents and the general public throughout the years. These include a radio interview (93.8 FM, Body & Soul) and workshops at Rise & Shine parenting forum and the 4th Clinical Nutrition Meeting by SingSPEN (Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (Singapore)) on fussy eaters.
Being a mother herself, and having journeyed with families as their child developed, she understands the challenges of parenting and strongly believes in empowering parents to facilitate their child’s feeding development. In recognition of her service, Devi has won multiple awards, including Service From The Heart, Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Gold) and Singapore Healthcare Service Quality Award (Team).
Devi is trained in Orofacial myofunctional therapy to help babies and children who are facing chewing, swallowing or breathing difficulties due to tongue tie or low tongue rest posture. These may include difficulties chewing harder or chewy foods, swallowing with tongue between or pushing against front teeth (i.e., tongue thrust) and mouth breathing. She believes in the importance of early education and training of oral and facial muscles so as to achieve optimal oral posture (i.e., tongue up and lips closed) to facilitate optimal functioning.
